Burnt Orange security alert new wifi security flaw – you need to know about this
The attack works against ALL modern wifi networks and is known as KRACK.
The wifi security flaw basics:
The modern security protocol which secures the data travelling between your laptop/tablet and the router has been found to have a flaw in it. This means that any insecure data that travels from your computer to your network or the internet could be seen or manipulated by someone else.
Microsoft released a patch a few weeks ago but many companies, including Apple and many router manufacturers, are struggling to get their updates out.
What you should do:
Ensure all your devices are up to date, this includes the firmware on your router/firewall.
Confirm you have antivirus on all your devices, this includes Apple devices, the days of Apple being unaffected by viruses is long gone. Cell phones are also susceptible to viruses today, ensure you have antivirus on your cell phone.
Always make sure that when you are connected to a website for banking or shopping that in the address bar at the top of the browser it shows HTTPS:// – the S being the important part.
The threat is from any device that can gain access to your network, the biggest threats from my understanding are:
1. Weak passwords on your wifi networks. Password is not a password and neither is 12345678. Get those imagination juices flowing and come up with something like #S4sk4t00n!
2. Coffee shop wifi. Often these use a very basic passwords. Either don’t use them at all or ask the staff if their router is in fact fully up to date with its firmware.
If you need any help with upgrading your network or just a general conversation on computer and network security please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
I hope this was useful, please feel free to pass it on.
